When I was a chubby, awkward middle schooler, I had the privilege of running around a track built by Coach Clebe McClary. He was a Vietnam Veteran and was recovering from more than 10 surgeries when he built that track. He was blind in one eye, missing the lower part of one arm and the other hand was ruined, and his leg was very damaged. Yet, he jumped on a tractor after school one day and built us a track oval, because the school district had neglected to give us one. Any boy that could outdo him in "clap hands" pushups got an automatic A for the year. My cousin took the challenge and won his A after more than 1,000 pushups. I check back in on Coach McClary every few years and find myself so inspired by the wonderful life he has lived, despite everything.
