Yesterday morning just before 8am I was hanging out the washing under the pergola roof when I heard a bang, turned around to find a beautiful small blue green bird lying on the tiles. It must have lost its way, flew in under the see through roof & collided with the sliding glass door ,fell down just missing the dog bed .I wrapped it up & put it in the cat carrier for safe keeping .The Vets open at 9am but the bird was moving around so I took the carrier outside ,opened the door & the bird flew out & after a few goes ,flew up into the trees watched by me & the cat.

I have never seen this type of bird before. It is a Mangrove Kingfisher who has probably lost its home to the bushfires. This photo isn't very good because it was overcast ,drizzling & the bird was in our cats carrier which is blue.

Thank you for saving him! We have belted kingfishers here, but I've never seen this little beauty. Thanks for sharing his adventure with us.

Neither Had I.I looked up our very large book of Australian birds which has hand drawn illustrated pictures of every bird in it.

So many of the animals who survived are now starving because their food supply is dead.I saw either a kangaroo or wallaby on TV eating a banana.Food has been dropped from the air to help the animals.

Beautiful bird Judy. I love our native fauna too, but am happy to say that our pesky Kookaburra that has been attacking our back deck for the past 3 years has gone for the time being. I will wait until September (our Spring) to see whether or not he returns!!! Love Chris

This bird is very small in compared to a Kookaburra.I wouldn't want pick one up unless it was unconscious.

Just as well that I was there, because last year our cat brought a live Pee Wee in through the doggy door. When we came home ,we found long white feathers with black spots scattered around on the down stairs floors.Eventually we found it on the kitchen window sill between the glass & the curtain .I went outside to see if it had escaped & was admiring the orchids which were on the table under the kitchen window & there was a Pee Wee looking at me.We managed to catch it ,took it out to the front yard , put it down on the grass & to our amazement it flew away.Pee Wees still visit the bird bath every day.

well you did a great job, it must have had a "black out" by the fall he made. but when he flew away when you opened the door, he will be alright. Lovely bird so far as I can see. 🐦
