Hi Cuties, A few days ago, my oldest daughter text me a photo and said look what her boss gave to me. It was a picture of this Brother SE350 Sewing and Embroidery machine. (see phoyos below) She said she couldn't get it to work and maybe I could, if not, maybe I could use the hoop or some part.
As you know it's been too cold to get out here, until today. I picked the machine up and brought it home. I had to go turn something off in settings, when I unplugged the foot control, but then I tried to thread it and looked what I discovered. How the thread got wrapped that many times is beyond me. I had to take the cover off to get to it, as you can see in the photo. Well I threaded it and it sewed these stitches fine.
Then I attached the embroidery unit and this kept coming up on the screen. I turned the machine on and off, countless times, even unhooked the unit and same thing. I then held my breath and attached MY unit that is on my Brother SE425. It worked! Something has to be wrong with the emb unit.
Well I text and told 'Shelly' the boss, the problem why it wouldn't sew (thread all tangled up). I told her the emb unit wouldn't work, but she had a good sewing machine and she could have it back. I hated to keep it for such a simple fix. She didn't want it. Told me to keep it. Said I sew so much I could have it. Well, I'm keeping it. Hubby said I could probably find a unit for it and even if I don't, I have a good machine.
Because the unit was attached when she sent it, it didn't have the 'cover' that slips on, when the unit is un-attached. It also came with just the emb foot. My other Brother feet will work with it, but I need the piece that the feet attach to. Does anyone know what that piece is called? Here is a photo of it and the cover I need. These are off my machine.
I did ask her about them, but she said she don't know where its is and was kind of vauge. She has another Brother, so maybe she kept them for it, which is fine. Regardless, all I need really to sew, is the attachment that the feet snap to. The cover I can make do without and the unit too, but if I find them, so much the better. The machine was probably hardly used.
Just tell me what you call the part that the feet snap to. It screws in the shaft and then the feet snap to it. Thanks Cuties-Toogie

I have heard it called an ankle.. Hopefully you will be able to get one from a dealer without much trouble.
My machine is not a brother but when I have a message like that come up, it usually is because the needle is not up enough, and the machine wants to have a say in how I do things.

The message doesn't come up, until I attach HER emb unit. When I attached MY emb unit, the message disappears, so I am assuming it will emb if I get a unit for it. The message isn't there for regular sewing (see photo 4) and it sews fine(see photo 2). so I wouldn't think the needle would be the problem here.

I went downstairs and got my manual out of the machine case.
Take all the thread out and re-thread.
try cleaning it. Not a good idea to use canned air as it just blow fuzz around. I use a soft art brush, but a regular lint brush will do.. Clean the race where the bobbin is (.Remove the case and replace correctly)
Could be a presser foot holder I see in a diagram, Change needles
They have temper fits sometimes and decide they're not going to work.
I have a SE30,Sq9185 to share parts. a Euro Pro can use the parts except the bobbins.
No. 6 looks like a flatbed attachment, Removes for free-arm sewing.
See about a manual they are really handy.

The machine works. I already took/cleaned the old thread out and see the second photo? It sews stitches well. I had to take my foot/shank off MY machine to try it out. It's the detachable emb unit that doesn't work. I only get this error message when the emb unit is attached, otherwise it purrs like a kitten.

Any Brother sewing machine that uses snap feet would have that same piece....if you have a Brother manual this piece should be identified with the proper name along with a diagram...this is what I found...

Hi Sweetie. Congratulations on a great catch. My Brother dealer wants me to use Schmetz needles in my machine, because it has a slightly larger shank and holds in position better than other brands. Hope this helps.

Well, not really in this case, because the machine does sew.....that wouldn't be why the unit didn't work.

Toogie, it is called just what it says....Presser Foot Shank for a Low Shank sewing machine.....
Yes, I realize that, I'm talking about the white plastic COVER. What do you call it? It goes on when the emb unit is removed. Regular machines used to have this and you stored your feet, etc in them, however this one has no compartment.

If the embroidery unit was attached when it was transported it is possible it was knocked out of plumb during the journey. Always better to remove the embroidery unit before sending or taking it anywhere. A dealer should be able to right it.

Have you thought of looking on ebay or other similar sites for the missing bits you need ?I don't have a Brother machine but have found that different brands of attachments fit my Diamond,so look through any machine attachments never mind the brand ,you might find the perfect fit.

I do that now-lol- trouble is I am running out of work space to set up all my machines, pc's, etc.

the Embroideryunit has a Belt inside It my be damaged. It happened to my Machine, not very expensive to change the Belt Maybe that will fix your problem hugs Ursula

Yes, that is MY sewing foot, shank and cover for MY machine. I just put the foot on hers to try it out and that's why I was able to sew these stitches on the gray dot fabric. Hers came with the embroidery foot, I just didn't show it when I reattached her unit so you could see and read the error message.
Look at the machine photo without the unit attached. Now look at the little cover and shank photo? That cover plugs into to machine, when you take the emb unit off, for it to sew like a regular machine. It also gives you a bit more work space. As someone said earlier you can take this little cover off too when you are sewing tight things like cuffs on a sleeve or children small things.

Congratulations Toogie. I resonantly made a cover for my dream machine I got it from Just Sew Patterns on Etsy if she doesn't have your one she will make a pattern for it. She also has a Facebook group page so you can get ideas on how to decorate it..

Isn't that the accessory box where extra feet, etc are stored? You might try the yahoo group SewIt'sForSale. You can post what you are in search of and if someone has it they will contact you outside the group. I have had good luck with both buying and selling on this group. Hugs. Nan W

Toogie, I had sent one of my machines away for repairs and after many months arguing with the staff at the workshop, when it finally came back the embroidery unit wasn't working.
I wasn't going to send the machine away again so I took it apart myself to discover the belt had come out of it's work path. Through trial and error, and plain common sense, I figured out where it belonged, put it back together and VOILA! It worked perfectly!
I'm telling you this because you have more than enough nounce to open up the embroidery arm and see if there is anything that has possibly come adrift inside it.
If it isn't working you've got nothing to lose by trying.
As for the presser foot shank I would try ebay, there's nothing you can't find on ebay. :-)

I felt like you, nothing to lose. After church and lunch, hubby took it apart. Nothing seemed to be amiss and both belts were on, so I don't know. It looked very clean inside, too. It may not be much wrong with it but we can't figure it out... Like I said I have a good SEWING machine, if not emb too.

Toogie, I've heard it called the leg and also a shaft. in either case, I had misplaced the one to my older machine and was able to get a replacement at my local dealer. They might have the cover piece also. I'm sure you could find them on line also. I have had the thread wrap around the eyelet before. Couldn't figure out what was going on.
The repairman told me that it has to do with the way you hand turn the wheel. The thread doesn't have tension when you turn it by hand
creating a loose thread that can then wrap around the eyelet. Needless to say, I am now more careful when raising and lowering the needle. Congratulations on your new machine! :) :) :)

When my old Brother SE270 went out, I saved all the parts I could take off, including the feet. BUT, there's that ugly word again, I remembered AFTER we junked it that I foirgot to remove this shaft part. Otherwise, I would have an extra one. Oh well, I can buy one for under $10 so now just have to find that cover.

no when he put it back together it would not work.
my 400 embroiders beautifully, however the feed dogs kick on for some unknown reason and causes and major problem.

Toogie Just a wild thought......... I noticed that you said the machine was sent to you with the embroidery unit attached : "Because the unit was attached when she sent it,"
This is possibly what has caused the malfunction as it is an absolute No, No to move any machine with the embroidery unit still attached.
Perhaps the problem is something as simple as the points inside the plug connections that may have been bent and/or not meeting up. Have you tried comparing this one with yours?

Thank you Sarah, I'm tickled pink! If I could have gotten the emb unit to work, I was going to offer it to my daughter Ashley. She used to work at an embroidery shop, years ago, and I thought she might enjoy embroidering for the kids.
