How fun this looks--I haven't seen rag rolling hair for years and years and yes, my hair used to be rolled in rags also. Brings back some memories--when older I also used cans from orange juice held in place with those long alligator type clips or long bobby pins. So many memories. These pics are really cute Toogie--so glad I took some time to sit and view through the topics.
I'm so glad to hear from you! I'm glad I took you down memory lane, even if all the lanes here (at home) are so wet!-lol- I never used the cans but we 3 girls were always in some type curlers.
Did you see us below? Daddy did that!
WoW, so cute... love the pictures! great job. your so talented!
wat a great job you have done Toogie ,,Nora looks so sweet
Your family is soooooo lucky! They have you. Nora always will remember her curly hair and whom made that beautiful dress. Grandparents like your make children's life wonderful!
I love your posts.
Such a nice thing to say. I appreciate your kind words. I also know there are a lot more grandmothers here, that do as much as I do, if not more. It comes naturally to me because I love them so. Nora is always telling me, "I love you Gram". That makes anything I do worth doing, for those 4 words. Thank you -Toogie
Love the curls and her smile! You did an awesome job on the dress, the slip, the curls--all of it!
Thank you. I found some knee highs and my daughter ran up to the Dollar store for another pack of 3 or 4 pair. Cut them in half and rolled the hair up wet. She slept on them and we took them down next day after lunch.-We laughed because when I rolled her hair and she saw herself, she cried," They don't match, I don't even have brown in my dress!"-lol- she thought she was going to wear her hair like that for the party!-lol.....Now the smile I had nothing to do with, but I love it too, so sweet. -Thanks-Toogie
Adorable! I also suffered through sleeping on rag curls! LOL loved the curls,,,but hated having it done, took too long and were bumpy to sleep on. My Mother would say, you have to suffer a little to be beautiful!
All the pictures are wonderful...and the bow looks wonderful. Nora is as cute as a button!
I have heard that expression too! As for as I know Nora didn't complain about sleeping with them, although she had her own thoughts about them. Look in parkermom comment.
I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures and Nora is so sweet, if I say so myself! She makes me laugh.Thank you-Toogie
Beautiful. Wow those curls. I also can remember having my hair put up in rags every Saturday night ready for Sunday School the next day. How I hated sleeping with then in. Nora looks so cute. Hugs to you for all the work to make her night. Hugs
Shirley, I think we've all had to sleep on some sort of rollers. Brush rollers were the worst. Like sewdoctor's mother said, we all have to suffer to be beautiful!-lol----I have not been suffering in years!-lol-lol
I promised clintonmiss22 this story.
Mama wanted to go to a bridal or baby shower, I don't know which, but she wanted daddy to keep us. You know back then, not too many men kept the kids. Well, I don't know WHY he did it, but while she was gone, he gave all three of us a hair permanent! Maybe it was to get back at Mama, because she doesn't look too happy here with us, but neither does Sheila or me. Looks like Sue and Daddy were the only ones liked it!-lol
These pics are precious! Love your curls. My hair was SO straight that the curl never lasted long after the rollers came out. Never had rag curls, but Mom used "spoolies" - little pink spool shaped curlers you flipped the edges down over the hair to hold them in place. I probably looked like an alien in them. LOL Can't imagine my dad giving us perms. My sibs and I curled HIS hair while playing beauty shop, but he only brushed ours.
At one time we had those same pink spoolies, as you call them! See how straight my bangs are? My hair is still like that. Thank goodness, we have curling irons and hot rollers now, so we don't have to sleep in those brush rollers. Boy, talk about a restless night sleep!-lol
Daddy used to barber, not as a living, so I guess he knew how to handle hair. I remember he had those clippers where you squeezed the handles like hedge clippers to cut the hair.... Our old neighbor spoiled me and let me do anything. I even wanted to cut his hair with daddy's clippers. You should have seen the gaps the old fellow had! He must have loved me dearly, because I still remember how bad it was...maybe he went straight to the barber!-lol-I hope so!
Yes, those brush rollers were the worst! Slept on those a lot as a teenager. Those, or orange juice cans trying to straighten it. We can't be satisfied, can we? If it's curly we want it straight, and if it's straight we want it curly. We're all so fickle to the fashion trends!!
How cute! You outdid yourself with the dress AND the curls. What did you decide to do with the sash?
I shortened the sash 6 inches on either side. I added a back view to show you. Thanks for looking. I want to find a photo of me when I was young, to show my curls. IF I find it, I'll update. You will get a kick out of that story!-lol
What a wonderful job you did, Toogie...I can certainly understand your being tired!
Yes, it has been a very busy week, everyday something to do or somewhere to go. Squeezed in a visit with Avery during her lunch hour at school this week, too. The meeting is in 3 days, whether she remains there. I don't see a problem, as they say she is a joy to have there.
Absolutely adorable. You did yourself proud. Everyone looks wonderful.
Thank you and they had a ball. The band played 50's music and I wish I would have gotten the photo of the leader, in his light blue jacket, with microphones on the back.
Loved all your pictures thanks for showing us what u been doing hugs
That is a lot of curl! You have done well the whole family looks great.
That is how my mother did my hair and I my girls brings back memories. The suspender straps for the petticoat was a great idea no worrying about it falling down, the dress is beautiful. Nora looks adorable she will be a knockout like her mum. Well done Gram. Marian
Thanks Marian, I asked Nora if anybody called her by my name, because she looks like me, when I was that age. I used to have some red plaid suspenders when I was young. Didn't have any hips to hold my skirts up.....don't have that problem now!-lol
How gorgeous they all look Toogie. No wonder you are bushed. A great job. We are in Sydney for the weekend and have seen the devastation that hurricane Harvey has doled out - it's just heartbreaking. Prayers for all concerned. ❤️ Chris
I know the storms could always be worse but I sure hate devastation from them. That's a lot of rain at one time, to areas that have been getting more than record amounts all summer. We have friends at Corpus Christi and SIL works in Victoria at times. It should not ever be another Katrina, if people will heed the warnings.
You know what I did? I took the whole skirt of Ashley's homecoming gown and made the slip but cutting it around 3 times about 12 inches. The skirt was in gores, so each layer got fuller/wider as I cut toward the hem. I used 3 layers of stiffer net and I layer of soft tulle by her body so it wouldn't scratch. I gathered the net to two 1 1/2 inch ribbons cut about 33 inches long. I then sewed the ribbon together at the top edge only and sewed the elastic in between the ribbon, but only onto the ribbon next to her body. I hope you understand. I had to put her straps to hold it up as it kept slipping down with the weight making her slip show at the hem of the dress. Thanks for looking-Toogie
Oh my that brings back memories of Shirley Temple curls. I can still remember going to bed with my hair rolled in rags to get that wonderful look.
You sure did them proud with getting everything done in time.
Nora is a peculiar little thing. She first got upset when I took her hair down. She thought it was going to be like her moms, even though we had talked about the curls beforehand. She also loves Shirley Temple movies. I bought about 10 VHS tapes from the thrift shop and she watches when she comes. However, as we got ready she was 'ok' with the curls and after she came back she was excited to say, Ellie her cousin that is her age LOVED her hair. If Ellie likes it, it has to be a good thing!-lol
