I wanted you all to see, I finally got a chance to answer all your nice comments below. I was so busy this week, if I was a dog, I could say I felt like I was chasing my tail!-lol- I have made a more recent post about the 50's fund raiser with Nora and her dress. Thank you all for looking-Have a good day and pray for flood victims, tornadoes in Texas and Louisiana.-Toogie
Your girls sure are well dressed by you. Love dress.
Thank you for sharing Happy Sewing :~)
Beautiful dress. Whatever you decide to do with the bow will be just right. What a versatile pattern. I had a similar one I used to make lots of dresses for my eldest granddaughter. Hugs.
I did shorten the sash (you can see in the more recent post). The party is over but they had fun! Thanks
The dress is beautiful. I would make bow a little narrower and shorter in length, It just seems to over power the back of a gorgeous dress. Lovely work.she will look lovely in it. Hugs Lynn
Love this!! You did a great job. Ahhh, sweet memories of all our mom's making us dresses like this! I was 9 yrs old before I had a "store bought" dress! Sash...may be a bit long, but if it stays tied I'd probably leave it as it is! I hate to pick out seams & redo!! Be sure & post a pic!!
I had it all basted so it would be easier to rip out the seams. I did shorten the sash, though.
You sound like me...I didn't get a brand new coat until about 12 and that's only because I would have rather freeze to death, before wearing my sister's red coat with the white fur trim. I said I'd look like Santa Claus!!!-lol- That was really the only time I remember I refused to wear my sister's hand me downs.
Brings back so many memories Toogie. Have this pattern in my stash somewhere. Made it in so many different fabrics some with lace and sleeves, some trimmed with bias tape, always with a sash but not quite as wide as the one you have done. They all got handed down from one to another./Lillian
Yes, I know...I was the last in line....lol-Mama was always making our dresses, but it seemed the older sisters got the new, because I guess me being the youngest, it was a waste to make mine new and then have no one to pass it to....and they say the baby is always the spoiled one, I beg to differ.
Cute dress! My grandmother used to make my sister and me dresses like this. Sister was older and got her dress made first; so her dress usually had an extra row of some kind of embellishment (rickrack or lace) - Gran ran short before mine was done. LOL. Looks like the bow is a little heavy/long. It may stay untied as much as it stays tied, if Nora is as busy as my granddaughters are.
I've been "out of the loop" for two months while traveling so went back and read old posts about Avery. Glad to hear that she is doing well in her new school and I will keep you all in my prayers.
Avery's month trial will be up the 30th. They all seem to love her...hey, what's not to love?-lol...and she seems to be doing well, thank you.
Mama was the one who made our dresses, as grandmother was always quilting. At least you did get a new one. I had to wait until I was older to get new, as our bodies changed with maturity and had to be more fitted, so theirs didn't fit me right.
Absolutely lovely. I couldn't believe it when my 13 year old granddaughter
showed up in a dress and crinoline recently.and a friend said the same thing. What is old is new again.
You have done a beautiful job. I hope we get to see a picture of Nora wearing it.
HUGS
Just posted some photos, as the 50's party was last night. It was a fund raiser for the youth class.
bonjour de France
La robe est très jolie, j'ai l'impression de retrouver un modèle que j'ai porté petite fille
A bientôt Gisèle
The dress and the bow is beautiful.....I would shorten the tie ends maybe 3-4 inches.....they won't be so inclined to come untied when she sits...The dress is adorable!
Thanks I took your advice but shorten 6 inches as they were very long. The sash pattern for this dress was missing, so I used one from a floor length flower girls gown. It was way too long for this dress and probably too wide as well, but I left the width. (see photo in another post)
Absolutely wonderful. I agree with others, wait to see how it looks when she tries it on to decide about the length of the ties. Nora will be so adorable in this dress. So glad you got to see Avery. I understand how hard this is for you.
Thank you, we sure do miss her. Even though we CAN drop in anytime, we hate to interrupt her school day. Most of the time when we are up there (an hour away) its for morning appointments, so we go during her lunch break. It doesn't give us but an hour and really not that, by the time she is fed and changed, but at least we do get to see her. Nora's dress and hair do was a hit, thanks.
Wow! Toogie this is an awesome dress for Nora. She will look wonderful in it. I'd personally wait to see how long the bow sits when she is dressed up in it. Of course the addition of a stiff petticoat whether it be rope, tulle or crystal organza could puff it out and make the bow sit higher. Anyway you can always shorten it if it's too long.
Can't wait to see Nora in it. I used to have dresses like this that my Nanna made me back in the 50's - gosh that was eons ago!!!!!!!!!!! Love Chris
Brings back memories, doesn't it? I have a photo of me with a plaid skirt mama made me, with X straps in the back. The blouse was a dark color, with the band made out of the plaid, like the skirt. Thanks and I did shorten the bow.
Beautiful I love the old patterns.
So glad you got to see Avery.
Kathy
I do too love the old, better than some of this new stuff, they want us to attire our little girls with. Thank Kathy, Avery is doing well. She looks like she has grown so much and its only been a month, almost. I guess because I don't see her as often as I did, she looks like she got bigger. Or it may be that I've been seeing Nora and Gus so much, when I look at her she seems big.
Love styles for children back then, you did a wonderful job.
Nora will look gorgeous in this. I think the bow tails are a little long, but don't alter them until you see it on her. Marian
Beautiful. I used to make little girl dresses and loved doing it too. You have once again impressed me with your talents. Hugs, Suzanna
Isn't sewing for them fun? Except Nora doesn't like to be fitted-lol- Thanks for looking and the high compliment-Toogie
Beautiful sewing the dress looks gorgeous The Bow may not be too long once there is a body in the dress and a bump in the back where the bottom is.
I remember having very gathered dresses and a rope petticoat under less scratchy than net back then.
I am sure once you get a chance to do a fitting it will all come together perfectly.
Please tell what was a rope petticoat? I remember they came out with one that had like a bicycle intertube at the hem. You could blow it up and it would make the dresses stand out, so much your panties would show when bending over. Then if that was too full out you could let some of the air out and the dress wouldn't be as full. I asked my husbands niece if she ever had one like that. She said her mama knew better than trying to put one on her! She was so much a tomboy, she said she fell out of a tree she climbed in the ninth grade and broke her tailbone. She said she had to pack a donut cushion, from class to class, and everyone knew they better not pick at her about it either!-lol
Toogie, you have done a super job with this dress, it is gorgeous. Nora will look a real treat in this beautifully made dress. Yes, I agree the bow tails are a little long, however you shall decide when she tries it on. Sandra.
Sanda, the night has come and gone. It was last night and they looked cute. Nora did have shorter tails!
Ahhhhh I love the old patterns and Nora is going to look absolutely gorgeous in this dress. I agree the bow is just a little too big. You did a great job
Precious. She will be a doll.
I have to admit, she was a doll.Thanks- Look in a more recent post, as the party was last night.
Oh my...this takes me back...My mom use to make all my dresses when I was little and this was one of them...I always had a very full skirt, puffy sleeves and a huge bow at the back...I think the ties may be a bit long...I always had a very full and stiff petticoat with lots of layers under my dresses that made the skirt stand way out, so much so that you could see the petticoat layers when I moved...If you have the time..I would be sure to add the petticoat...
It's done and I'm sorry so long before I answered your comment...been slightly busy-lol
I love it, tails are a little long, maybe a little above hem. If you have a full net slip under it will look great, love colors. I love the old patterns.
Seems like some of us do love the old patterns, when little girls looked like little girls!
Beautiful work as always. Love this style of dress. You will know what alterations to make as soon as you see it on Nora. Love the fabric and trim. Very lovely. Hugs, Barba
Barba, it's a good thing I have all this sash, as Nora's mom only has to come in here to shop for fabric, for projects she has for me to make. Thank you for looking and I love the old patterns too.
