I've just seen an article from an English newspaper which begins:

" A COUPLE from St Austell who added popular logos such as Hello Kitty and Fireman Sam onto goods they were selling through their eBay shop have been ordered to pay up for illegally using the trademarks."
They have been given a hefty fine, ordered to pay back money made from selling illegal goods and they will also have to do many hours unpaid community service.
Food for thought.

I'm fairly sure they are for personal use only.

I don't know if copy right extends to over seas, but USA can be very strict. Thanks for the story. I know many of you know of other stories. Kay

I am receiving e-mails from a site advertising Disney appliques. At the bottom of the e-mail it says I am receiving these because I previously downloaded their designs from Craftsy. The company is based in Tucson AZ. They are obviously open about selling licensed designs. Have yet to contact Craftsy to see what is going on.

Thank you for posting. I have tried to tell people not to use the license designs, but no one will believe that the big companies will & can come after them!! I do have a question: what if you buy NON licensed designs from a site, can you still get in trouble??

Read the terms and conditions posted on sites from where you purchase and download designs for information on what can and cannot be done with the designs. As always, the digital file cannot be resold or otherwise claimed as your own.

Do you mean, what if you buy an embroidery design of a licensed character, like Hello Kitty, from an unauthorized seller? I wonder about that, too, gerryb. I'm guessing that if you don't sell something made with that design, you'll be okay. But that's just a guess.

asterixsew by asterixsew 23 Jul 2016

Really one should not be buying illegal designs

sewromantic by sewromantic 23 Jul 2016

If you buy a design from an unauthorized dealer, you are buying a stolen design. Using it for personal use doesn't make it ok.

Thanks so much for posting this Sue. We all need to understand that there are very severe consequences for breaking the copyright laws. And people DO get caught. Hopefully, our Cute folks will be ever more diligent about checking websites for illegal designs now before posting a freebie.

It always amazes me how much illegal stuff is being sold and people do not seem to understand the risk they are taking.
