Does anyone know what this means 500sgm ,600sgm or other numbers? It is often on tags on towels.I have googled it but nothing came up to explain the meaning of it.

What is a good GSM for towels?
The quality of towels is determined by the GSM (grams per square metre). Poor quality towels have a GSM of between 200 - 300. Superior quality towels have a GSM of between 400 and 600. The more grams per square metre means that the towel are more absorbent and longer lasting.

It has to do with the densisty of a towel. The normal is around 500 grams, luxery towels are around 750 grams. They are sooo soft.

I agree, 500 gsm is an average quality, 750 gsm is superior. I just finished stitching 10 towels, which happened to be 600 gsm. Stiched them without stabiliser, with wss on top to tame the tiny loops.

I thought it was to do with thickness but the towels I have have different types of pile so it was hard to work out if this was right ,especially when they were all the same price.
Also I have noticed that some towels are staying the same price but are getting narrower 35cm which is too narrow for my liking.

Sorry I only know gsm (weight) I think sgm is got to do with the woven structure of the textile (stretched grid method???)
