Good day Cuties! Do any of you know what this is for? My husband made it for my aunt. When she found out I had a set, she asked him to make hers.

It's a quilt stand for holding your frame, while hand quilting. You have 4 long boards that are maybe 2x2 X 120 inches. You set them in each stand, at the corner of the quilt, where boards make a +.

Your lining is bigger than needed. You stretch it out smooth, and my grandmother used small tacks to hold it in the frame, but my old aunt said she staples hers. Then you layer with the batting and the top.

I can't remember if my grandmother and her sister would sew large hand basting around the outer edge, after the layers were placed together, but seems like maybe they did. I know when one of them 'had a quilt up' they would get together and quilt it out.

I know after I was married we had a 'quilting party'. Grandma and her sister got the quilt, in the frame one day, in my mothers huge living room. The second day was the party, inviting the ones who knew how to quilt. It really was the size of a full bedspread, going from floor to floor on the sides, and from floor at the foot and up enough to tuck around the pillows, at the head. We quilted all that day. The third day Grandma got it out of the frame, untacking it and I bound the outer edges.

It was made out of feed sacks, that real feed, for the animals came in. I have a photo of it and will try to place it here, if I can locate it later. It had a white background with little flowers all over. It was really pretty and I think we had enough to make her curtains to match. It was made for my oldest daughter, when she was young.

I really wish I had a photo to show you how its set up. Instead of these stands, my grandma would put her frames on the tops of ladder back chairs from the kitchen.

The quilt is full size when you start quilting but you can quilt a block all around the perimeter of the quilt. Then you untack a block wide that you just quilted, at the top/bottom and roll the quilt onto the side frame/board.

You then keep quilting from the sides, untacking top/bottom, rolling until you finish in the middle. That is why it is so important to stretch the layer taut, so you won't end up with it bunched in the middle, as its done last.

It really was great fun. As a kid, we used to play under the quilts when they were up. As a grownup, I enjoyed visiting while we quilted.

I know some Cuties knew what this was for and I hope it brought back happy memories for all of you. To the others, we're never to old to learn. ....Now I'm going to look for the picture of this bedspread/quilt.......Toogie

I found the photo of the one I described, out of feed sacks. It was little blue flowers and about 1978. Mamma made the dogs, pink and blue ones. I made the doll on left......no reason the child never liked dolls!!!-lol- it looks scary-lol

I remember my Gram and aunts used homemade saw horses to set theirs up on and yes mine would hand baste around the edges. I sewed my first stitches sitting under the quilt frames. Doll dresses, grand would cut out, thread a needle and tell me to get busy. Of course no doll could wear it. When raining my brother, cousin and I would sit under it and string long strings of buttons on needle and thread. Most of the time when it rained we had to go and play in the barn. Kids never stayed in the house around grown-Ups we were told.. LOL My how times have changed. Never saw a handmade quilt holding stands before./Lillian

Oh how I love to hear stories of days gone by. Times were so simple but better, in a lot of ways.(I like and remember, when kids got out and played) It seems like saw horses would take up so much room, but people used what was available, or that they already had, back then. Like I said, grandma used her kitchen ladder back chairs. I knew you had to have seen a quilt up on 'something'!-lol

Hi Toogie, is it a stand to hold your hand embroidery in your hoop? I am as bamboozled as everyone else. Love Chris

Yea!!! You do get points for your answer! It is a stand, actually there are four. Instead of a hoop, its a quilt frame. Instead of hand embroidery, it's hand quilting. Explanation at top and seeing it up with a quilt, look in link.

I haven't got a clue but it is a well-crafted piece of woodwork which just so happens, manages to go nicely with the colour and style of the sofa material!

Yes I have had a set or 2 myself over the years- Your husband did a nice job. I am actually surprised that so many Cuties do not know what this is. In the 80's we would see them at just about every estate sale, though not as nice as this set would be to use.

I was a little surprised at the 'older' Cuties, not knowing, too. My grandma used kitchen chair backs. She would have been tickled, to have a set of these 'new fangled things'-lol

You have me totally foxed. Something to wind wool around from a skein?? It is the holes that flummox me. I will wait with baited breath

The holes are to adjust the height.

toogie by toogie 19 May 2016

You can easily unscrew the wing nuts, slip the bolts out and raise or lower, to adjust the height you need, for hand quilting.

well long time ago I did sew a lot. And I had something like that to mark the length of a dress or skirt, but I suppose it's something else.....

I have a stand for a bobbin lace making pillow which looks a bit like it apart from the forked top. No idea what this is for, looking forward to seeing the mystery solved.

I would love to see your stand and also how you make the bobbin lace...Have you read it's a quilt frame stand. Consist of 4 stands and the frame is 4 long boards, usually about 2x2 inch.

I THINK it's the same? LOL

toogie by toogie 19 May 2016

Probably so, if its to put a quilt frame (4 long 2x2 boards) on.

It's a dual-sided croquet mallet so I could possibly hit the ball. It won't work very well as a pogo stick as it's lost it's bounce. I can come up with a few more silly ideas. You could sit in a chair place you feet on the boards and wrap yarn around the top; or the strips to make a rag rug. Ok I'm going off line now. by. lol

Lillian, I'm surprised at you!

bjban283 by bjban283 18 May 2016

I know what it is, used one in my younger days. My Mother and Grandmother both were quilters. Wish I had room for one today.

toogie by toogie 18 May 2016

I have the room for a large one now bjban283, but have only used mine twice, for baby quilts. Oh that reminds me, I do think I have a snapshot of the baby quilt on these stands ....I'll have to re- look.
