I have the hardest time finding the right Brown colors in my threads. I have every brown that Floriani has made, and yet when I get ready to stitch a moose, a bear, an eagle, none of them are just right. Do you have a favorite brown? I really prefer polyester. Thanks

Sometimes I put a lighter or darker shade of brown in the bobbin case when I don't have the exact color.

I bought a reel of twisted thread and that works well. The one I bought was called teddy bear colour. I can't see a brand on the reel. It was a bit more expensive but sews out lovely. Not in stripes like a variegated.

I really like the twisted ones for that reason :-)

I totally understand! I do not have enough red's. Lots of oranges, only 2 reds.

Yup...need more reds, too!

I need more reds, too! I think I just need more thread! LOL

I'm so glad that you asked this!! I have had the same problem. Brown is one colour that really seems to differ...golds too. It is good to see what others do and use.
Thanks, Hugs Nadyne

I don't have a favourite Brown, but I do have quite a large collection of them using Marathon, Echidna and Maderia threads..

Thanks, I probably need to look at these brands. :-)

yes, brown does cover nearly every shade from pale cinnamon right up to dark dark soil colours doesn't it, and don't forget the gold types which could also fall into the 'brown' category. Can you tell me why you prefer the poly over the rayon?

I can tell you really understand my problem with getting the right brown. :-) The rayon thread I have has shrunk for me. Maybe I wasn't using the right brand. Which brand doesn't shrink?

vickiannette by vickiannette 28 Aug 2015

mmm, don't think I can answer that difficult question.

I didn't think I had a favorite, obviously I was wrong. These are Gunnold/Sulky threads which is what Miss Nina prefers.

Thanks, Those are beautiful, but I don't see the color I would need for a Moose, a brown Black bear, an Elk, or even my Siamese cat. Maybe I am just too picky when it comes to brown.

I have the same problem. I think color is quite important when I do realistic designs. Sulky has my favorite brown colors, but they are rayon. So far I haven't found just the right shades in poly thread. I bought some Floriani brown too and had the same problem you have. Nowadays when I find a color wave that I really like, I buy a dark, medium, and light in that wave. Yellow is another color that is difficult for me to use in a realistic design.

I have a problem with yellow too. I may have to see what I can find in some other brands. Do you have a problem with rayon shrinking with heat?

pennyhal2 by pennyhal2 29 Aug 2015

I don't, but some have problems with it and bleach. So if it is for something that might need bleach, I use poly...but I just don't have "good" yellow threads. I've notice some threads are now saying that they are bleach resistant too.

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 30 Aug 2015

I hadn't heard about a bleach problem. Thanks

Don't have Floriani threads and I am not sure how many browns they make...I use Metro threads...polyester and a very high shine...I love them and they are very reasonably priced...and there is quite a good selection of browns...depending upon the density of the design, I sometimes stitch two colors of thread at the same time...or I change the stitch line spacing in my digitizing software and stitch the object two times...with two different colors so they blend together.

That's a great idea when it comes to blending, and duplicating the stitches. i wonder if we made the design just a tiny bit larger and used the second color where we aren't satisfied, maybe that would work........

The only brand of thread I have that has as high a shine as the Floriani is Hemingworth. It's a really nice quality, too, if you want to expand your brown choices.

Her, here Grace, I love Hemingworth threads. Love Chris

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 23 Aug 2015

Thanks, I have never seen Hemingworth threads, do you have a site where you can buy them? I'll do a web search....

Patricia109 by Patricia109 04 Sep 2015

lots of places sell Hemingworth. I received emails from several companies in the USA that stock it and one in Australia. Hightechgrammy send me a PM if you haven't found a place.

Have you tried stitching the underlay with a darker color?

graceandham by graceandham 17 Aug 2015

Oooh! No I haven't. I like this idea.

jrob by jrob 17 Aug 2015

It really adds depth and realistic color.

Leaha by Leaha 17 Aug 2015

Thanks for helping me learn a new idea today. :)

marianb by marianb 23 Aug 2015

Will have to put this in the memory bank for future reference

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 23 Aug 2015

I haven't tried that.... All I would have to do is quickly digitize an area under that part of the design. Usually though, all those stitches on top would cover that area. Thanks for the idea, I'll give it a try!

sbott54 by sbott54 29 Aug 2015

I hadn't thought of using a darker shade for the underlay. What a great idea and quite helpful! Cuties are an encyclopedia of knowledge. Thanks!

I like Poly X10 thread. I get it at my dealers & they have a lot of browns. I also use some Coats & Clark as well as Sulky. I know what you mean about having a ton of shades & never find what you want!!
