Edited 7/30-I made her a second one, same big size.It has peace sign, butterflies, hearts. Right now I'll keep this one here since she already has the pink one, until I can make more, as I am giving serious thought of taking the baby bed down. It's been up almost 10 years! She has grown so tall, she almost doesn't fit. The reason I like having her in it, just to change her and let her rest for 30 min or so, is it doesn't hurt my back. I have the bottom springs raised all the way up, and 2 mattresses, so I don't have to stay leaned over to tend to her. I will have to use one of these pads, on my queen bed that I just raised with those furniture risers. It still doesn't make it as tall as the baby bed mattress, but I may be able to manage.------Cuties, something simple but very useful. I don't know why we (mom and me) didn't think of this before, but since Avery's last hospital stay, the idea finally came to us! Those pads #1 photo, they use in the hospitals, under the patients booties/bottoms, would save mom, from having to wash so many bedclothes all the time at home. It also makes it easier to move Avery around, since she has gotten bigger/older. With one on each side of the bed, we can grasp the pad and slide her up toward the top of the bed, or whatever. We measured her bed across and this is the first one I made, so we will see if the measurement works for her. My only concern after I started is the seams, as I had to piece my pink check fabric, in 3 places. I don't want the seams to cause a bed sore, from pressure/her weight, on the seam. If this size works, I will be able to use the 45 width across the bed, from side to side, and 36 inches from head to foot way. That way I can use a whole yard of fabric and no seams to hurt her body.... I stippled the pink top to one layer of fleece, to give it a little pad and also body, so it wouldn't bunch up under her. You can see where my fabric went/stopped, photo #2, on the 60 inch fleece. Avery gets very hot sometimes, when laying in the bed, so I may not be able to use the fleece or any padding in between. I then put right side of pink fabric and vinyl side of Baby Dry together and stitch around, leaving me an opening to turn right side out. After stitching seam opening closed, I stitched all the way around the outer edge, about 5/8 inch away from edge. Except for the free motion stippling, it was hard for me to handle today, it was really simple to make...#3 photo If you don't know what Baby Dry fabric is you are missing out. I use it on the back of bibs for her. It is soft and waterproof, although it is wash and dryable. I also use it in lining my zipper bags, I use for meds,make-up, shaving kits,Etc. I get mine at Hancock Fabrics and it is 60 inch wide and $9.99 yard BUT they always have a 50% off one fabric item so $5!! Yea!! I cannot tell you enough how much I like it...Also, just to let you know, Avery is doing g-r-e-a-t ! I stayed with the girls a few hours yesterday, so mom could shop last minute food/stuff, for the party tomorrow. I only fed her once but mom said every 4 hours, she has been taking 8 ounces and digesting! Praise God! Thank you ALL for prayers and words of encouragement. We really appreciate them.-Toogie

Good to hear that Avery is doing so well!
Have you looked at a JoAnne Fabrics. At one time I saw something similar--not sure if it was the same brand name-- at the one I shop at but while I thought "how cute" I had no use for it. Now, you have put some ideas in my head so next time I will check if it is still there.

The only way I can 'describe' it is, one side feels/looks like flannel but it is bonded to a rubberized/vinyl side. It only comes in white. Here I quilted free motion my green cotton print to a white fleece, then backed it with the Baby dry, after quilting.

Not really, but maybe a slow thinker-lol

NancyBT10 by NancyBT10 30 Jul 2015

Toogie, I recall an article that I read a few years back on the human brain and a study on people with high intelligence and interesting conclusions. They found that truly ingenious ideas come to people who are slow thinkers. In fact, it is well known that Albert Einstein was a slow thinker ;) So, take your time and keep making super projects!

Nancy you are always encouraging me. Thank you for being a good friend to me.

Toogie, it is your kindness that rubs off on people :) Thank you!

I call them pads but believe nurses refer to them as chucks. You are one grand woman.
This has got to be the prettiest pad on the planet. Being careful to watch for seams.
So glad to hear all the good reports on Avery.

Yes, I won't make any future ones with seams. She came back from a stay with her dad, with a little sore place by her tailbone. I asked her mom when I changed her diaper about it, if it was a bedsore. Mom said it may have been the beginning of one, but we tended to it and it is just about healed up. She has never had one but we watch for anything...Avery is doing good, she is going today for her follow up visit, after surgery. I had her the last 2 days.

I hope you do find it. I went to Hancock Fabrics here and bought the last 4 yds they had. My friend that came for a sewing morning yesterday, wanted some so she called in another town. They didn't have any. I do hope they don't discontinue it.

Fantastic idea! when there's a need your mind goes into over drive an sometimes the answer has been staring back at you, you just didn't realise it. These will ease the pressure on her little body and make life a little less demanding in the laundry dep

Thank you Cathy, it was a clever idea, from someone long ago. It's also good we finally thought to make some for her. I am sure whoever it was had a need just like us, so as not to wear out the washer nor the bedclothes.

Do you know Christine, I was told today that Hancock Fabrics may not be getting it anymore? I hope the girl doesn't know what she is talking about in this case. This is a good product. My husband always says, if its any good 'they' quit making it, whatever it is.

The pads are great.Used them in the Nursing Home especially great for pulling up in bed and turning and wedging from side to side. By moving the pad instead of patient's body there is minimal friction to cause breakdown of skin. You have done well Toogie and I am so thankful Avery has done so well/Lillian

toogie by toogie 26 Jul 2015

I am too, Lillian, she really looks great. Mom feels confident she made the right decision, after the surgeon showed her photos, of why Avery had so much back flow/reflux. Mom really has a lot of responsibility, resting entirely on her shoulders, when it comes to Avery's health care. Biological dad just 'goes with the flow' and leaves everything to mom.

Chris, I guess because she is getting older, she holds her urine longer, and so when she goes sometimes its too much at once. Then it's not only her clothes but the bedclothes too. This will saves some much needed, rest time, for the machine and us-lol

That's what it looks like the hospital ones are made of. I'm not sure what is inside for the padding. I used pink gingham on the top here, because sometimes she gets overheated.

Wonderful news about Avery. Love these little pads you are doing. Would be good for lots of people in lots of situations. Would have come in handy when my kids were having a sick day and drinking in the bed, propped up!

So glad to hear Avery is doing well, I have made these also. I would like to suggest to you something I have done is to sew an extra piece of sheeting or nice light weight material to two sides big enough to be tucked under the mattress that way the protector will not move under her or bunch up. You have done an awesome job with this. Sandra.

toogie by toogie 25 Jul 2015

Thanks Sandra and I may use your suggestion as this is my 'trial' pad. We did measure for it to go down on the side of the mattress a little. When she is on the pad in the bed the rails are up so they should hold it in place, if I measured right. We will see tomorrow when I go for the party, how it fits. Thanks for sharing any suggestions, or ideas.

You want to know a thought I was thinking, just today.... I know God has planned everything in life, but to plan for me to learn to sew and enjoy it, then to use that 'talent' because of personal 'needs', shows me just how to the smallest detail His plan for our lives are. What an awesome Creator!

Just spreading some love and ideas for anyone with bedridden or invalid patients. Before Avery was like a baby or toddler and you could easily pick her up. Now she is taller and although she has been 37 pounds for quiet a while, it is dead weight. With my back problems and my husbands, this may make things better.

Great idea and washable, As she gets bigger, what about 60" wide cottons and the 108" wide cottons in the quilting department. I buy my 108" wide at Hancocks and with the 5o% off, it is about 8.99 a yard. Just a thought for the future. Thank you for the info on baby dry fabric, I will look for it when I go to Hancocks.

I tried to put a link to Hancock Fabrics online for all but I couldn't find it with search. I called my local store and got someone I didn't know. She didn't know what I was talking about and finally said they must not can get it anymore. I hope she is wrong. Last time I bought I got 5 or 6 yds, but if she is right, that won't last me long.
